Newsletter November 1999
T - NOTES
Ahhhhh, show season! A time to primp and preen your birds so that they will look their best for the
judge during show season. My birds are just finishing up the molt and there are a couple of birds that
I think will do well this year.
I just heard that Steve Hailey, who will be our judge at Nationals this year, just took first and second
best Norwich at Raunds. This is the third year in a row that Steve has won that show.
Keith Ferry tells me that Brian Allen raised some good birds this year even though he lost over half
of his stock. Brian won the Kellogg for best Type Canary with a Norwich last year.
Francis Martin imported some truly stunning birds this year. He showed me some of the birds he
raised this year a couple of weeks ago and he has some birds that will be tough to beat at Nationals.
Stephanie Burk is thinking about importing some Norwich next year. I have been told that she wants
to import some birds from Steve Hailey. She also has decided to write some articles for our
newsletter.
Nationals will be held on November 18, 19, and 20, 1999 in Buffalo. The ANS meeting will be held
Saturday November 20, 1999 in Room C at 1:00 p.m. I hope everyone will plan to attend since this
is the first year in a long time that we will be meeting after 9:00 a.m.
It is official, the votes have been cast and officers have been elected. Here are your new set of
officers for ANS.

ANS wrote a letter to the NCBS board and requested that the Yorkshire and Norwich Canaries be
put in one division at Nationals. When the board met in March our request was denied because the
moratorium for changes was still in effect. There was a special meeting held in July at which time the
moratorium was lifted and a division was given to the Colorbred and Timbrados. The Norwich and
Yorkshire division was not even discussed. Brian Allen has since written a letter to every member
of the NCBS board asking them why this occurred, that letter has been included in this newsletter.
I would like to encourage every member of ANS to join NCBS and vote for individuals who would
like to see a division for the Norwich and Yorkshire Canary. ANS is looking for individuals to run
for the board of NCBS who would support our position.
ANS has talked to the Yorkshire club and the President of the Stafford club. Both of these clubs
have agreed to help ANS with creating a new division. Brian Allen and I will meet with these clubs
at the National to discuss our strategy.
One of the things being discussed is a petition. ANS will be circulating a petition for members of
NCBS to sign expressing their desire for a separate division consisting of the Norwich and Yorkshire.
I have included a copy of it in this newsletter. If you are a member of NCBS you can fill this petition
out and mail it back to me.
Remember that Bands are $3 for a lot of 10. Many of you are still paying $2.50 for a lot of ten bands.
This past year it cost ANS 25.5 cents per band and that doesn't include the postage it takes to mail
bands out.
If you have an article you would like to submit for our newsletter please send it to

The following letter was sent to every NCBS board member
At the March 6, 1999 meeting in Buffalo, the NCBS board was presented with a request to
create a new division for the Melanin Colorbred, a combined Norwich/Yorkshire division and
show catalog changes by the Hartz club. The board tabled the request until the current
moratorium on changes expired.
The ANS would like to know if the proposed new division for the Norwich and Yorkshire was
discussed at the special NCBS board meeting held on July 30 and 31, 1999, as there was no
mention in the minutes of any dialog regarding our request. We are also interested in why a time
specific moratorium was lifted at a special meeting not consistent with the normally scheduled
NCBS board meetings. Because a new division is very important to the ANS and we have the
support of the other three major specialty clubs within the type division (Yorkshire, Stafford and
Columbus Fancy); it is our intent to pursue this matter. The ANS has and will continue to support
the NCBS financially and otherwise, as it is a wonderful event. We respectfully request a
response to these questions and written guidelines as to what is necessary to create our proposed
new division.
Sincerely,
Brian Allen William C. Burdett

Letter from the President
Fellow ANS members,
It is an honor to be selected as the new president of the ANS. I will do my best to take over the reins and further promote the NORWICH, as it is such a magnificent breed. I have been involved in my local club, the American Canary Fanciers Association, for ten years. I have served in various positions, and have been the "show manager" the last two years. I have been breeding canaries for ten years and Norwich for eight.
There are currently steps being taken to push the Norwich more and more into the limelight. The ANS has, and will continue to propose to the NCBS board, a new division for the Norwich and Yorkshire, separating us form the other breeds in the Type division. 1999 will be the second consecutive year that the "ANS Derby" award for the best Norwich exhibitor will be given out, giving us all something to shoot for. Lastly, the ANS would like more input at the national level so we are actively seeking out candidates for the NCBS board. If you know of somebody, or if you'd like the challenge let us know.
I would like to thank Will & Lee Burdett for carrying on the routine activities of the club, it's a lot of work! And last but certainly not least, I would like to thank Dr. Francis Martin who was the founder of ANS and now past president, without him there would not be an ANS, Thanks Francis!!
Good luck this show season, I hope to see you in Buffalo.

Eggless Nestling Food by Stephanie Burk
Although I have been a devoted Gloster breeder for several years, I have always secretly admired
Norwich canaries at the shows. In 1995 I confided to a Gloster breeder friend, at the National, that
if I were ever going to "stray" it would be for Norwich! It wasn't until last year, though, that I gave
into the temptation (or "came to my senses" as Mr. Martin might say!) and purchased my first
Norwich.
I want to share a great eggfood recipe with you all. It's easy, the birds love it, and the chicks are fat
and wean easily. The recipe is based on a grain called Quinoa (pronounced Keen-wa), a high fiber,
high protein, source of calcium and iron. Once the quinoa is cooked and cooled - you can freeze it.
(if you do plan to freeze, don't mix in other ingredients, add them after you thaw the quinoa).
I make a week's supply of quinoa and freeze it in plastic containers, which will hold a one-day supply.
If you move a container from the freezer to the refrigerator in the evening, it will be ready to use in
the morning.
Now for the basic recipe:
Barb Rosario's Eggless Nestling Food-
Ingredients-
1/4 cup uncooked quinoa
1 cup Nestling food mix
½ cup 7-grain cereal
2 Tbs. vegetable protein powder
* 2 Tbs. all bran cereal
* 2 TBS granola cereal
* 1 biscuit shredded wheat
Soaked or sprouted seed
Makes 3 quarts.
* grind these and keep in ziploc bags - you can vary the cereals.
After measuring the quinoa, rinse thoroughly to prevent bitterness. To cook the quinoa the ratio is
1 part quinoa to two parts water. Dump the quinoa into boiling water, cover, and cook on low for
twenty minutes. After twenty minutes stir and let cool. At this point you can either freeze the quinoa
or make up your eggfood recipe.
Quinoa seems to be easily digestible and not so rich as to cause 'messy vents" or problems during
weaning. I have lost only one chick during the weaning process in two years of using this formula.
I do feed egg on the side - shredded, and mixed with soak seed. By the way, if you shred the boiled
eggs you can freeze them too! I have been freezing shredded eggs for the past five years with no
problems.
If you love the smell of the simmering quinoa as much as I do, save some for yourself and try this
Native American dish for the humans in the house!
Quinoa and Black Bean Salpicon
Serves 4
1 16 oz. can black beans
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 c uncooked quinoa
1/4 tsp. Cumin seeds
Juice of one large lime
3 Tbs. Extra virgin olive oil
½ Tsp. Sea salt
1/8 tsp. Freshly ground pepper
1 c. summer squash (yellow and/or zucchini) unpared, raw, julienned
1 c. jicama or 1 medium cucumber, peeled and diced
4 plum tomatoes, chopped
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and diced
2 scallions, thinly sliced
1/3 c. fresh mint, finely minced
1/3 c. fresh cilantro, chopped
2/3 c. fresh parsley, finely minced
Medium-size romaine lettuce leaves
1 ripe avocado, sliced
Drain and rinse the black beans, add garlic and let stand. Dry-roast cumin seeds in a skillet over
medium heat for approximately 1 minute, stirring or shaking the pan constantly. Grind seeds in a
mortar with a pestle or in a spice mill, or press them with the back of a teaspoon against the edge of
a bowl. In a bowl, combine the lime juice, olive oil, cumin seeds and the salt and pepper. Toss with
the black beans. Let sit for 15 minutes. Fluff quinoa in a large mixing bowl and toss with squash,
jicama, tomatoes, jalpeno, scallion, mint, cilantro and parsley. Add the black-bean mixture and stir.
Scoop into lettuce leaves and garnish with the avocado.
I hope that both your Norwich and you will enjoy the quinoa recipes.

To the NCBS board
I would like for the NCBS board to create a new division for the Year 2000 NCBS show. This new
division would consist of the Norwich and Yorkshire Canary.
I am currently a member of NCBS in good standing.
