Bulletin 1999 - 2000
T - NOTES
Well it is March and way past time to get out the newsletter. In January I was waiting for some
articles to put in the newsletter. In the middle of February I decided to wait until after the March
NCBS meeting before I sent the newsletter out. I hope everyone is gearing up for breeding season
2000 and will be raising an incredible number of quality of Norwich.
The NCBS March meeting was held the first weekend in March. As you know ANS, the Yorkshire
Canary Club, and the Stafford club were asking for a new division to be created for the Norwich and
Yorkshire. At the 1999 NCBS our ANS club circulated a petition that we presented to the board in
which 83 members of NCBS had signed requesting that the new division be created. The Norwich
and Yorkshire Canaries have averaged 122 entries over the last 6 years. I believe this is about the
same amount of entries as the new colorbred division that was created last year and when the new
lovebird division was created several years ago. Brian Allen gave the talk to the board about why
ANS felt the new division needed to be created. The board discussed it for a long while and several
good points were made. In the end the new division was not created. Brian and I felt that there were
two reasons as to why the motion failed. I would say the main reason why the new division was not
created was because it would have left the Columbus Fancy and Staffords in a division by themselves
and very few members of the board believed that these two clubs could take up the slack. The other
reason was that the National Norwich Plainhead Club was not backing the new division. I think that
if NNPC was behind the move our proposal would have been received a little better by the NCBS
board. We told the board that they needed to come up with some rules to govern the creation of a
new division. A few of the board members thought that we should have tried for a Norwich only
division. So I guess that next year we will ask the board for a Norwich only division.
You should plan on bringing as many Norwich to the 2001 NCBS in New Hampshire as you can.
ANS will give a cash prize of $300 to the best Norwich if and only if there are 100 Norwich shown.
Several people have told me that they would not be going to Puerto Rico this year so we decided that
we would start this in 2001. If there are 100 Norwich or more at the NCBS in 2001 the winner of
the Best Norwich will receive $300. So plan to bring as many Norwich as you can to the 2001
NCBS. I plan to bring 20 Norwich to show at the 2001 NCBS.
If you are wondering where you can get cages there are two places that I know of which produce the
Norwich show cage. Our own Henry Olszower and Superior in England make Norwich show cages.
The judge for the Type Division at the 2000 NCBS in Puerto Rico will be Sal Di Pasquale. You
should remember him since he judged in Houston in 1993 and Denver in 1997. This will be the third
time he has judged the Type Division in the last eight years.
ANS has awarded two champion diplomas in the last two years. In 1998 Brian Allen's bird won
a diploma and in 1999 Will & Lee Burdett won one. How did these birds achieve champion status?
First the birds were banded with an ANS band. Second the birds were shown by the same individual
who banded the birds. Third the birds placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd at a minimum of two different shows.
Fourth the birds accumulated 20 points. The points were awarded depending on the number of birds
in the show and whether the birds placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. If a show had 10 Norwich or less at a
show then the points awarded were 5 points for best Norwich, 3 points for 2nd best Norwich, and
2 points for third best Norwich. For a show that had more than 10 Norwich but less than 26 Norwich
the points were 10, 5, and 3. For a show with more than 25 Norwich but less than 66 Norwich the
points were 20, 10, and 5. The following is a list of birds who received points in the last two years.
You will notice that some of the band numbers are missing from the results. You need to make sure
that the show secretary fills out the show results with the band numbers so that your bird can get
credit.

ANS would like to congratulate Will & Lee Burdett for winning the ANS Derby. They took 1st and
2nd place at the Florida Canary Fanciers Colorbred and Type Canary Show and had best Norwich at
Nationals in Buffalo. This gave them a total of 100 points in the Derby. A committee was formed
at Buffalo to change some of the rules of the ANS Derby. K. Rigdon, R. Pezzuti, B. King, and W.
Burdett are on the committee. There are now four shows at which you can earn points to compete
in the Derby. These shows are the American Canary Fanciers Show in Los Angeles, California, the
Florida Canary Fanciers in Orlando, the National Cage Bird Show, and the newest show is the
Cascade Canary Breeders Association in Seattle, Washington. The following is a list of the updated
rules for the Derby.
Each year there will be a list of shows for which ANS will award points for placing First, Second, or
Third. Currently there are only four shows that I know of that meet the criteria. The criteria to be
in the ANS Derby is to have 15 Norwich and at least 3 exhibitors in the show. There can only be one
show in an area. We would like to place one in the North and one in the middle of the country so if
you know of a show that fits the bill let us know and it will be put up for consideration. Here is how
the points will be distributed.
The winners at the American Canary Fanciers show will receive 30 points for First place, 20 points
for Second place and 10 points for a Third place. The Florida Canary Fanciers and Cascade Canary
Breeders Association show will receive the same number of points. The National Cage Bird Show
will receive 50 points for first place, 35 points for second place, and 20 points for a third place. At
the end of the year all of the points are totaled up and the person with the most points wins a trophy
and $100. To be able to enter the ANS Derby, and have a chance to place First, Second, or Third,
a person MUST be a paid up member of ANS and the show results have to be turned in to William
Burdett before the NCBS.

ANS MINUTES --- MEETING --- NOVEMBER 1999
BUFFALO, NEW YORK
The meeting was called to order by ANS President, Brian Allen, at 1:20.
The President welcomed new members and guests. Twenty-four people were present.
Minutes: The previous minutes from the Newsletter were approved
Treasurer's Report: Club Treasurer, Will Burdett, submitted no report; however it will appear in
this newsletter
The President congratulated Will Burdett for winning Best Norwich, Lindsay Clack for Second
Best, and Francis Martin for Third Best. He then asked the Type Judge, Steve Hailey, to
comment on the overall quality and condition of the Norwich in the show. Since his last judging
engagement at the National (New Hampshire), Judge Hailey noticed that color (i.e. color feeding)
had improved, but also suggested more attention be given to presentation. Francis reminded
everyone that Norwich are given 5 points for staging and that these are 5 points the exhibitor
earns for his bird.
The President then presented Francis Martin with a few gifts for his services to the society over
the past twenty-nine years. The President pointed out that Francis founded ANS in 1970, and has
the oldest continuous line of Norwich in America.
Old Business:
(a) The issue of rings (bands) was addressed. They are now 35 cents each. This year's discrepancy in color between ANS and NNPC rings created a lively discussion. It was suggested that next year both clubs consider placing one large order, rather than separate orders, so that the color is consistent for both. Of course, each club would continue to use their initials. No decision was forthcoming. It is hoped that Ellen Sheldon will run this by the President of NNPC and report back to us;
(b) ANS's Derby was discussed. Bob King, Ron Pezzuti, Charles Long, and others asked for
more information and clarification on how the Derby operates. Due to the shortness of time, Will
Burdett asked that such questions be mailed to him; he will response through the ANS
Newsletter.
New Business:
(a) Nomination of judges. For the 2000 National in Puerto Rico Lindsay Clack and Max Saedi were nominated from the floor;
(b) The color of the interior show cage. The color used by American Norwich fanciers is not the British standard; this is the only difference between our show cage and that used in Britain. Francis Martin pointed out that in 1970, when he started ANS, he found it impossible to match the British color (this was before computerized paint matching), so he selected the color we now use. He now feels this was a mistake for the following reasons:
-it is not the standard color
-many of us get our show cages from England which we must repaint
-as a lighter hue, the British color reflects light; therefore, it shows the bird more clearly than the American color which absorbs light
-if you use the American color on the inside of your double-breeders, as many of us do,
then the interior is too dark.
Bob King made a motion that we accept the British color, this was seconded by Francis Martin. After a discussions, it was proposed that we have a three to five year period in which both colors would be accepted. Thereafter, the new color would be required. The President called for a vote and the motion passed, 23 to 1.
(c) The President awarded Will Burdett the NNPC plaque for Best Norwich.
With no additional new or old business, the meeting was adjourned at 2:00 PM
Respectfully submitted: FM
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Fellow ANS members,
The show season is over for most of us - I see it as the climax of our year
as bird enthusiasts. We set the birds up in the spring, wean the young,
bring the birds through the molt, color feed, show train them, all so we
stage them and compete. I enjoy the excitement of competition, a win after
all that work is the "icing on the cake." Unfortunately, there is only one
Best Norwich per show so most us go home with no "icing." However, the good
Lord in his infinite wisdom created something for us losers, it's called
spring. No matter what happens to you during the year there is always the
renewed hope that Mother Nature offers us every year. As I look toward the
new year I would like to wish you and your families all the best.
Brian Allen,
President ANS
